STUDENT SAFETY TO AND FROM SCHOOL

When walking to and from school it is important for students to follow all traffic rules. When coming to or leaving school, students should always stay on the crosswalks and sidewalks. At no time is it safe to walk or run through the parking lot. At no time should students play in the front areas of the school. Unsupervised playground activities should NOT occur before or after school hours. Arrival time is no more than 30 minutes before school starts. When students arrive at 7:30 am they should line up by no later than 7:50 am as teachers will pick up at 7:55 am.

If it is raining when students arrive at school, they go directly to the MPR and please provide them with proper raincoats and or umbrellas.

Please keep in mind, school begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. on regular days and 1:22 p.m. on minimum days. Gates are locked by 8:00 a.m. Students who arrive late must report to the front office first to receive a late slip before going into the classroom.

  • Parents may drop off their Kindergartner at their classroom. Following drop-off, parents must leave campus. If volunteering parent must sign-in at office and get a badge. Volunteers must be trained and have TB test prior to volunteering.
  • 1-3 grade parents note your son or daughter must go directly to the blacktop line-up area in front of the cafeteria. Students are not to go to their classroom unless teacher is expecting them. Supervision is provided in the blacktop area, and various high traffic points on campus.
  • Kindergarten: Students are dismissed from the classroom by their teacher upon seeing a designated adult/guardian listed on the emergency card.
  • Grades 1 – 3: Teachers dismiss students from the classroom. Students who are not picked up at the classroom will be escorted to the supervised front drop-off and pick-up area. Students who are not picked-up after 2:45pm will be taken to the office.

If you are more than 20 minutes late to pick up a student, please go to the front office.You may be asked to provide identification.

Parking

Parents are reminded to follow all parking lot guidelines to ensure safety in the parking lot for all students. The back parking lot is for staff parking ONLY. Parking on bus drop-off is prohibited. When dropping off your child, do not let your child out of the car until you are stopped at the edge of the curb. Please abide by the directions of our volunteers and staff. They are working hard to ensure the safety of our children and peace of our community. Since we are a Peace Builders community and that includes parents as well as teachers we should model respectful behaviors at all times.

Parking Lot Etiquette??????????

  • Please drive slowly.
  • Please ensure the safety of all students by NOT parking in the bus loading area.
  • Buses have priority.  Please be aware of their presence and try to make their entrance and exit as easy as possible.
  • Follow the Golden Rule with other drivers and staff members. Remember that you are not the only one in a hurry.
  • Please, if you escort your child out of the car, please be mindful of our limited parking and other parents wanting to drop off their child.
  • Pull up close to the car in front of you.

Bicycle Riding

  • Bicyclists are required to wear safety helmets.
  • Bicycles are to be walked on school property.
  • All bicycles are to be placed in the bike racks. Locks are recommended.
  • The school and district are not responsible for theft, damage, or loss of use to any bicycle, equipment or article left in or around this area.

DAILY SCHEDULE

 

School begins promptly at 8:00am.  Students are expected to arrive at school no earlier than 7:30am, unless they are participating in the breakfast program. Upon arrival students are to line up on the blacktop line up area until the 7:55 morning bell. They are to remain quiet and use their best behavior while in line. NO running, chasing, jumping or playing will be allowed before, during or after line up. Teachers will escort students to class promptly at 7:55 and be ready for instruction by 8:00am.  On cold and rainy days, students may be taken to the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) until the 7:55 bell in which teachers will be picking up their students and escorting them to the classroom.

School Attendance

 

School attendance is required by law. The amount of time that a student attends class correlates very closely with learning. Consequently, the importance of regular attendance and arriving at school on time cannot be overemphasized. Help your child be successful academically by getting your child to school on time every day. Please try to schedule appointments afterschool or on vacation days.

Students absent without a valid excuse for more than three days in one school year shall be classified as truant. Students more than 30 minutes tardy on three school days in one school year shall be classified as truant.

A School Attendance Review Board (SARB) addresses the needs of students with attendance problems. Student and their family are referred to SARB by the school principal. Both the student and their parent are required to attend SARB.

Tardies

It is extremely important that students attend school on time. If your child is tardy, he or she must report to the school office for a tardy slip before entering class. The student will be directed to the school office when the 8:00am bell has rung.

 

Dismissal

Please be on time to pick up your child on time means 2:30p.m on regular days and 1:22p.m. on minimum days, either at school or at the bus stop. If there is NO parent or adult designated in writing to pick up a child, he or she will be taken to the office. When a child is returned to the school office and has not been picked up the following steps will be taken:

  • Student or a staff member will try to reach parents.
  • Persons on the emergency card are contacted in order to arrange for someone to pick-up student.
  • If no one can be reached or has come for the student, the San Diego Police Department is contacted.
  •  When the San Diego Police Department assumes responsibility for a child, he/she may be taken to the Polinski Center in San Diego.

Should an emergency arise and you are unable to pick up your child on time, please notify the front office immediately at 619-661-6753.

All parents will be required to sign the Late Pick-up Notice and note that an ID will be required before a student is released to any adult.

 

Early Checkout

If your child needs to go home during the school day, the student must be picked up at school by an authorized parent/guardian or adult. For your child’s safety students will only be released to authorized adults listed on the school emergency card. It is very important that you understand that you must update emergency card information to reflect any changes and that you provide as many current phone numbers as possible where you can be reached. School personnel will ask for a photo ID when you are picking up a student. The school clerk or administrative assistant will call the classroom for the teacher to release the child to the office. Parent and designees will be asked to wait in the office for student to arrive.

??????????Absence Procedures

It is required that each absence be verified by the parent/guardian. We need you to call the attendance clerk the day your child is absent. Parents can report an absence by calling 619-661-6753.  Please try to call before 9:00 am when possible. Upon returning to school following an absence, the child must check in at the attendance office. If a note or phone call is not received, the absence will be considered unexcused

Visitors

When visiting the school campus, you must please first stop by the main office to sign-in the visitor’s log and obtain a visitor’s nametag.  Parents dropping off lunches or other items for their children must leave these items in the office.  Walking onto the campus without checking into the office and receiving the proper identification nametag is not permitted.

To pick up a child from school, an individual must be an adult listed on the student’s enrollment card and be able to prove his/her identity with a picture ID. These procedures help maintain a safe campus.

Medications

A San Ysidro School District, Request for Administration/Storage of Medication in School Form is necessary for any student to receive medication while at school. No medication will be given at school unless this form has been completed and signed by the student’s doctor and parent and it is on file in the school’s Health Office. We will only accept the medication in the original prescription container. Students are never allowed to carry medication of any type with them to school or kept in a backpack.  All medications must be current as medication is not kept from one year to the next.  

Birthday Treat Alternatives

In keeping with our district’s Wellness Policy and because of the many students with serious food allergies we will not allow parents to bring sweet treats or sugar filled drinks. School is a great place for kids to learn the value of making healthy food choices. We are a Peanut-free Zone.

Here are some ideas for helping kids celebrate their birthday without resorting to the cupcakes.

Suggestions for Non-Food Birthday Treats

How about bringing a surprise for the classroom or for each child that is not a food. What a novel idea, right? Who said we had to spoil our kids with candy, cupcakes, and soda on their birthdays?

1. Donate one of your child’s favorite books to the classroom.  You can write their names and birthday on the inside cover, so the book will always be a representation of that special day.

2. Hand out small tokens like pencils, stickers, or erasers to each student..

3. Create a special “Birthday Book” where each student can write something or draw a picture about the birthday boy or girl.

4. Give the child a special birthday box with a sash to wear and a certificate.

  • Please talk to your child’s teacher at least one week in advance before sending any non-food birthday treats. Please be very considerate as to not disrupt the educational process.

School Rules

These are the school rules all students are responsible for:

  1. 1.     Respect and obey all adults
  2. 2.     While you are on campus walk at all times.
  3. 3.     When using the stairs, stay on the right and hold the rail.
  4. 4.     Take care of school property and equipment.
  5. 5.     Listen and follow directions.
  6. 6.     Use only kind words and actions toward others.

 

School Conduct

 

  • Students are encouraged to use Peace Builder strategies to solve their problems.
  • Students will respect everyone and follow all directions.
  • Profanity, vulgarity, name-calling or any teasing/harassment are not permitted. It may result in suspension.
  • Students are encouraged to make wise decisions.
  • Students are encouraged to praise others.
  • Students must always walk on school grounds. Students must always use the hallway and sidewalk when heading to cafeteria or playground. Do not cross through open corridor.
  • Fighting and bullying is strictly forbidden and will result in suspension from school.

General Rules

  • The school is not responsible for damage or loss of personal items.
  • Skateboards, scooters, roller blades (in-line skates), and shoes with wheels of any kind are not allowed at school.
  • Students who purposely break or damage school property or equipment will be expected to pay for repair or replacement.
  • Playground equipment, bathrooms, and drinking fountains are to be used properly.

            Playground Rules??????????

  • All students are expected to follow the playground rules and to be a Peace Builder.
  • Students must obey the instructions of all the noon-duty supervisors
  • Students must stay within playground boundaries, amphitheater grass area, classrooms, or walkways during recess time.
  • Students should immediately freeze and squat when the bell sounds, then line up when the whistle blows two times. Then, students are to walk to the designated class room number.
  • Failure to show mutual respect will not be allowed and may result in a referral.
  • Students walk on the blacktop areas unless it is instructed differently.
  • Teachers or designated adults bring students to the blacktop area for recess/lunch and bring them back to the classroom at the end of the recess/lunch.
  • All snacks, food, and drinks should be eaten and/or consumed in the snack area or lunch arbor.  Healthy snacks examples are granola bars, fruits, vegetables, etc. Please remember that we are a peanut-free zone.  Snacks cannot be shared among students due to allergies.

Restroom Rules

  • Walk in the restroom using inside voices.
  • Lock the door stall when using the restroom.
  • Flush the toilet.
  • Always wash your hands.
  • Always keep restroom clean.

Bus Rules

  • All students must wear their bus badge/pass at all times.
  • Students must practice good safety habits and behave in an appropriate manner when riding the school bus, waiting at the school bus stop or going to and from a bus stop.
  • Inappropriate behavior may result in the loss of privileges to ride the bus.

Rewards for Following Rules

  • Students will receive verbal praise.
  • Classroom rewards
  • Praise notes
  • Free time

Consequences for Not Following Rules

If students choose not to follow one or more of the rules the following may occur:

  • Time out
  • Loss of privileges and or recess
  • Conference with student
  • Parent contact
  • Classroom or office detention
  • A referral  to principal
  • In school suspension for three or more referrals
  • Out of school suspension if it offense meets Ed Code requirements.

Students who are kept in for recess are allowed to get drinks and use the restroom as necessary and obtain second chance breakfast if it applies.

It is our objective to encourage students to follow school rules, cooperate with, and respect the rights of others (teachers, staff, parents, and other students).

 

DO NOT BRING

Animals

Dogs and other pet animals are not to be brought onto school grounds at any time.

Toys, Games, Etc.

Students are not allowed to bring toys to school as it is a distraction to learning and often results in lost or broken toys. This includes (but not limited to) trading cards, tazos, footballs, soccer balls, and handheld video games. The school provides sufficient items for children to play with during recess.  Students may not bring their own playground equipment.  CD players or any other type of electronic entertainment devices are not permitted on school grounds. Theft or loss of such items will not be investigated by school personnel.

Gum and Candy

Chewing gum or candy is not allowed on school grounds.

School Uniform Policy/Dress Code

Uniform Policy

School uniforms promote an environment of learning and help instill school pride. Use of appropriate attire enhances the educational process by emphasizing academics, achievement, and dignity.  Complying with the uniform policy also allow school officials to better monitor a safe and secure school environment.

Why School Uniforms?

At the request of many parents, and with the support of Senate Bill 1569, the Governing Board of the San Ysidro School District approved the implementation of a mandatory uniform policy that all schools will report for class in navy and white uniforms.

The new uniform guidelines were approved by 99% of the parents who attended the forums, open houses, and special uniform meetings which were held during the 1995-1996 school year prior to implementation.

The uniforms have helped instill school pride while eliminating the distracting competition associated with teen fashions.  In addition, they have also proven to be more economical.  More importantly, San Ysidro students will be dressing in a style which emphasizes academics, achievement and dignity.  Uniforms allow school officials to better monitor the schools, therefore, contributing to the safe and secure environment.

The Mandatory School Uniform Policy is available at each school site and in the Pupil Services Office if you wish to request a copy.  If this new requirement creates a financial hardship, please contact the school principal where your child is attending.

 DRESS CODE

  1. Shirts and blouses must be tucked in at all times. Half shirts/ crop tops/low necklines, mini-skirts; short shorts are inappropriate and not allowed.
  2. Shirts must have a collar and be tucked in.
  3. Only white colored undershirts are allowed to be worn under the school shirts or blouses.
  4. Pants/shorts must fit at the waist, not be cut or excessively long, and hemmed/cuffed. Denim pants are NOT allowed.
  5. Shorts must be no shorter than (3) fingers above the knee and are not allowed below the knee. Skirts must not be any shorter than (3) fingers above the knee.
  6. All oversized clothes are strictly prohibited.
  7. Belts can’t extend more than 3 inches beyond the buckle. Webbed belts are not allowed.
  8. Shoes must be worn at all times; no slippers or socks (tennis shoes must be tied appropriately)
